Quick answer: Start with Google search ads if people already search for what you sell, for example "AC repair in Noida" or "CA for GST filing". Start with Meta ads if your product is new, visual or bought on impulse, which is true of most D2C brands. Most businesses use both in time, but one channel done well beats two done halfway.
The core difference: creating demand vs capturing it
Google search ads appear when someone types a query. The person already has a need, and your ad is one of the answers on the page. This is capturing demand that already exists.
Meta ads appear on Facebook and Instagram while people scroll, and they can also open a WhatsApp chat. Nobody asked for your product at that moment. Your video or image has to stop the scroll, explain the product and give a reason to act. This is creating demand.
That one difference shapes almost everything else: how much creative you need, what kind of budget works, and how quickly you can expect results.
Google Ads also includes YouTube, Shopping, Display and Performance Max campaigns. Some of these reach people who were not searching, so they behave more like Meta. In this guide, "Google ads" mainly means search ads, because that is where most Indian businesses start.
Meta ads vs Google ads: side by side
| Meta ads | Google search ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Where people see you | While scrolling Instagram and Facebook | While searching for a product or service |
| Buyer intent | Low to medium, you create the interest | High, they are already looking |
| What drives results | The creative, especially the first few seconds | Keywords, ad copy and the landing page |
| Creative needs | New videos and images every few weeks | Text ads, plus a page that matches the search |
| Starting budget we usually suggest | ₹1,000–₹1,500 a day | ₹20,000–₹30,000 a month in ad spend |
| Best for | D2C products, new categories, visual offers | Services, local businesses, urgent or high-intent needs |
| Main risk | Creative fatigue and low-quality leads | Expensive clicks in competitive categories |
When Meta ads should come first
Meta usually makes sense as the first channel when:
- Your product is visual. Skincare, fashion, home decor, food and gadgets are easier to sell with a 20-second reel than with a line of text.
- People do not search for it yet. If you have created a new kind of product, there may be very little search demand to buy.
- The purchase is quick and low-ticket. A ₹699 product with COD at checkout can be bought within minutes of seeing a good ad.
- You can supply creatives regularly. Meta's targeting is now largely automated, so the creative does most of the targeting work. Ads tire, and you will need fresh ones every few weeks.
Meta also makes it easy to test language. One product can run with an English hook, a Hindi hook and a Hinglish hook, and the results tell you which way your audience leans.

When Google ads should come first
Google search usually makes sense as the first channel when:
- People already search for what you offer. Plumbers, clinics, coaching institutes, packers and movers, CA firms, B2B suppliers and most local businesses fall here.
- The need is urgent. Someone searching "laptop repair near me" wants help today, not next month.
- The ticket size is high and buyers compare. For an expensive course or a home interiors project, people research before they enquire, and search is where they research.
- You sell products people search for by name or type. D2C brands in categories such as protein powder or water purifiers can start with search and Shopping campaigns together.
- You do not have much video yet. Search ads are text. You still need a good landing page, but you can start without a steady supply of creatives.
Watch costs in crowded categories. Click prices are set by an auction and vary a lot by keyword, city and season. Use Google's Keyword Planner to see rough estimates for your own keywords before you commit a budget.
Budgets and tracking
For most businesses, we usually suggest:
- Meta ads: at least ₹1,000–₹1,500 a day, so Meta has enough data to learn who responds.
- Google search: around ₹20,000–₹30,000 a month in ad spend to start, focused on a small set of high-intent keywords.
These are starting points, not promises. Ad spend is paid directly to Meta or Google, plus applicable GST, and any agency or management fee is separate.
Before spending either budget, get the tracking right:
- On Meta, the pixel and Conversions API, with purchase or lead events firing correctly.
- On Google, conversion tracking through the Google tag or GA4, with the right actions marked as conversions.
- For COD orders, look beyond orders placed. Cancelled orders and returns to origin (RTO) can make a cheap-looking campaign expensive, so judge channels on delivered orders where you can.
- For lead businesses, track which leads became customers, not only how many came in.
Which should you choose?
- If you sell a D2C product that people need to see to want, start with Meta ads.
- If customers already search for your service or product, start with Google search ads.
- If you are a local business, start with Google search, and keep your Google Business Profile complete and up to date.
- If your total ad budget is under about ₹30,000 a month, pick one channel. Splitting a small budget usually means neither platform gets enough data to learn.
- If one channel is working and stable, add the other. Meta creates interest, Google catches the people who later search for your brand, and both can retarget your visitors.
The right first channel depends on how your customers buy, not on which platform is popular this year. At Kalpyx, one team runs Meta ads and Google and YouTube ads alongside the content that feeds them, so both channels share the same tracking and the same view of your customer. If you want a second opinion on where to start, our free growth audit looks at your current ads, website and tracking.
FAQ
Should I start with Meta ads or Google ads?
Start with Google search ads if people already search for what you sell, such as a local service or an urgent need. Start with Meta ads if your product is new, visual or something people do not search for yet, which is true of many D2C brands.
What is the minimum budget for Meta ads and Google ads in India?
We usually suggest at least ₹1,000–₹1,500 a day for Meta ads, and around ₹20,000–₹30,000 a month in ad spend to start Google search ads. What you actually need depends on your category and competition.
